Stainless Steel 317

Stainless Steel 317 is an austenitic chromium-nickel molybdenum stainless steel alloy with higher corrosion resistance than 316 and excellent oxidation resistance compared to 304 stainless steel alloys. It also contains elements such as silicon and niobium, which results in increased mechanical properties like higher tensile strength at elevated temperatures. The composition of this alloy can range from 2% – 3% molybdenum, 11%-15% chromium, 4%-6 % nickel, 0.9%-1.2% nitrogen and up to 1.85 % manganese; however, its composition may vary depending on the application for which it is being used.

Stainless steel 317 is an austenitic stainless steel, that provides excellent corrosion resistance, especially in acidic and highly corrosive environments. It offers good strength and creep resistance at high temperatures as well. This alloy also contains molybdenum content, increasing its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. Additionally, the addition of chromium enhances its mechanical properties, making it ideal for applications requiring greater strength, such as valve bodies, fasteners, paper mill equipment and storage tanks.
