Stainless Steel 317L

Stainless Steel 317L is a low-carbon, molybdenum-containing, austenitic stainless steel alloy with excellent heat resistance, corrosion resistance and fabrication characteristics. It contains 18%-20% chromium, 13%-15% nickel, 3%-4% molybdenum and small amounts of nitrogen and other trace elements. This combination of elements makes it highly resistant to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion in acidic environments such as saltwater environments. Adding molybdenum increases the strength properties compared to 304-grade stainless steels while still providing superior corrosion resistance properties.

Stainless Steel 317L is an alloy comprising 18-20 per cent chromium, 11-15 per cent nickel, 3.0-4.0 per cent molybdenum, up to 2% manganese, and trace amounts of other elements like silicon and nitrogen. It is a low carbon variant of SS 317, allowing it to be used in more corrosive environments than regular stainless steel alloys. It offers excellent resistance against pitting, crevice corrosion and general corrosion in several media, including hot organic acids such as acetic acid. Its properties make it ideal for applications that involve handling chemicals and chlorine compounds that attack ordinary grades of stainless steel. The material has high mechanical strength at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for use in aerospace industry parts exposed to very hot air up to 2000° F or higher!
