The filler metal has a high resistance to corrosion and oxidation. The alloy has limited amounts of iron and manganese to improve the capacity of the filler metal to withstand general and stress cracking corrosion. The property also increases resistance to impingement and erosion in bubbly water and silt flowing at high velocity. However, the filler metal is not ideal for highly corrosive environments like polluted water and acid plants. It is used for welding similar grades of alloys with a minimum of 10% nickel composition. The electrode can withstand corrosion in seawater thus widely used in offshore applications.

Properties of copper-nickel 90/10 electrodes

Mechanical- The density of the material is 8.1g/cm3. The alloy has a tensile strength of 550MPa while the yield strength is 240MPa. The elongation capacity of copper-nickel 90/10 electrode is 30% in 50mm.

Chemical- The components of the filler wire are carbon, chromium, nickel, manganese, copper, zinc, iron, and lead. The manganese and iron percentages are almost negligible to improve corrosion resistance.
