In India, the cost of SS 316 pipe is usually about INR 250–650 per kg. The exact price depends on the pipe’s thickness, size, finish, and the quantity ordered. Seamless pipes and mirror-polished grades cost more than standard welded or 2B-finish pipes.

SS 316 is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel grade. The molybdenum content (2.0–3.0%) gives it superior corrosion resistance compared to standard 304 grade, especially in chloride and acid environments. It complies with ASTM A312 TP316 and ASME SA312 standards for pipe manufacturing.

316 stainless steel works well in harsh, corrosive, or marine environments because it resists rust from chlorides. For regular indoor use or areas with low corrosion, 304 stainless steel is usually adequate and more cost-effective than 316.

316L has a lower carbon content, 0.03% maximum versus 0.08% in standard 316. This lower carbon makes 316L more resistant to sensitisation (carbide precipitation at grain boundaries) during welding.
