Stainless Steel Fasteners

Stainless Steel Fasteners

Stainless steel fasteners are high-performance threaded components used to join, secure, and assemble structural and industrial components. These components, also known as SS fasteners, are manufactured from chromium-based iron alloys with chromium content ranging between 10.5% to 30%, and are often combined with nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen depending on the grade. The mechanical properties depend on grade, with tensile strength of about 515 MPa (Grade 304) to more than 860 MPa (Grade 17-4 PH). These properties include an oxide coating on the surface, which provides corrosion resistance, making stainless steel fasteners the preferred choice in the construction, chemical processing, marine, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and oil and gas industries.

Stainless Steel Fasteners Price

The price of stainless steel fasteners depends on the grade, size, and order quantity. Below are the factors mentioned that affect the final cost of the product:

Approximate Price Range

Stainless steel fasteners are usually priced between Rs. 210 and Rs. 1800 per kg, depending on the grade, size, and order quantity. The standard grades like 304 and 316 are generally affordable in cost, while special alloys, custom sizes, and certified products are more expensive.

Factors Affecting Price

The factors that determine the cost of stainless steel fasteners are that the higher alloy grades, such as 316L or 317L, are costlier than the 304 grade due to the higher amount of nickel and molybdenum content. Larger or more complex fasteners cost more as they require more material, while buying in bulk from a reliable suppliers often reduces the price per piece. The market price of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum also affects the final price. In addition, specifications like mill test reports (MTRs), third-party inspection, NACE MR0175, and special surface treatments further increase overall procurement costs.

How to choose the right stainless steel fasteners supplier and manufacturer?

Before choosing the right stainless steel fastener manufacturers and suppliers, it is essential to check the material traceability, project schedules, and long-term performance. Evaluate that each supplier and manufacturer meets the following in 4 criteria.

Choosing the right supplier and manufacturer

Select a high alloy fastener manufacturer in India who specialises in high alloy fasteners rather than general purpose fasteners. A good supplier will have stock ready, be ISO 9001 certified, and have full material traceability with mill test reports (MTRs).

Technical Considerations

Make sure the supplier provides the correct grade (304, 316, 316L, 321, 347, or speciality grades), size range (M3 to M100 or 1/4" to 1-1/4"), thread form (Metric, UNC, UNF, BSW, or BSF), and applicable standard (ASTM F593, F594, or BS EN ISO 3506). When ordering offshore, chemical, or pressure service, ask for compliance documents.

Evaluating supplier credibility

Quality assurance is verified by third-party certification such as IBR, PED, Lloyd's Register & Bureau Veritas. Do not obtain fasteners for critical piping or pressure systems without checking these documents. A full certificate package should be included with every order; this should comprise dimensional inspection reports and heat certificates.

Procurement strategy

If buying large quantities or on a project basis, check price consistency, flexibility of order, and delivery times. For critical applications, request pre-dispatch dimensional and hydrostatic testing. Also, check the packing specifications (wooden crates, fumigated packing if exported) and verify shipping documentation before dispatch.

Stainless Steel Fasteners FAQ's

The SS fasteners are used in several industries, such as manufacturing, construction, chemical processing, marine engineering, food and beverage, oil and gas, aerospace, medical equipment, and nuclear energy. These fasteners are highly corrosion-resistant and do not require any additional coatings, which makes them the preferred option for outdoor use and harsh corrosive environments where regular carbon steel fasteners would quickly corrode.

The cost of stainless steel fasteners ranges between Rs 210 and Rs 1800 per kg, depending on the grade of stainless steel, type of fastener, size of fastener, and certification required. Standard grades (304, 316) are more affordable than specialist or high-performance grades (317L, 17-4 PH).

The pressure ratings of stainless steel fasteners are not standardised. Working pressure is related to the fastener diameter, thread form, class of flange, and applicable standard. The pressure rating of stainless steel stud bolts is determined by the flange class and service temperature, and is not specifically related to the fastener itself.

The materials and fasteners are produced using stainless steel and are produced to either ASTM F593, ASTM F594, or BS EN ISO 3506. Thread forms are in accordance with ASME B1.1 (UNC/UNF) and ASME B1.13M (Metric). Dimensional standards are according to ASME B18.2.1 (Hex bolts) and ASME B18.2.2 (Hex nuts). The grades are all austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, and precipitation-hardening alloy grades.

Stainless steel fasteners do not have a wall thickness in the way pipe or tube products do. For hollow fasteners or socket-head cap screws, the body wall and drive cavity dimensions are governed by ASME B18.3 or DIN 912, depending on the head style. For threaded rods and studs, the nominal shank diameter and thread pitch are the critical dimensions, not wall thickness.
